Through-coloured (monocouche) render in Leeds

A cement-based render with the colour mixed through its full depth. It is often applied by machine and finished by scraping to give an even texture.

About this finish

How through-coloured render works

What it is

Through-coloured render, sometimes called monocouche, has pigment throughout the material rather than painted on the surface. It is commonly sprayed by machine and then scraped back to a textured finish.

Where it suits

It is a popular choice for whole-house renovations, extensions and commercial buildings. Our projects with it include houses in Horsforth and Adel, bungalows in Alwoodley and Wakefield, a school in Bradford and a nursing home in Blackburn.

Colour

Because the colour is in the render itself, the finish does not depend on a painted coat. Colour ranges, and how the finish weathers on your wall, depend on the manufacturer's system and the conditions.

Approved contractor

Ecorend

Ecorend is a UK render manufacturer based in Dalton, North Yorkshire, and part of the Wetherby group. It makes through-coloured (monocouche) and thin-coat render systems in Yorkshire.

Ecorend systems we install

As approved contractors, we can install render systems from the Ecorend range, including:

  • MR1 One Coat Render: a through-coloured monocouche render that Ecorend describes as low-carbon
  • LMR1 Lime Monocouche: a one-coat lime render for traditional solid masonry and older buildings
  • SR15 Silicone, SF15 Sil-Flex and SR365 Ultimate Silicone: silicone thin-coat renders
  • DR1 Dash Receiver: a base for dry-dash finishes
  • EWI versions of its systems: for external wall insulation

We confirm the exact system for your walls at the site visit and in your quote.

Suitable for

New and existing masonry homes and commercial buildings. Ecorend positions the lime system for heritage and solid-wall properties that need to breathe, and its insulation systems for improving energy efficiency.

Finishes

Through-coloured renders give an even colour and texture with no painting. Thin-coat systems come in a range of colours and textures; Ecorend offers a colour selector.

Main benefits

Ecorend states its products carry British Board of Agrément (BBA) approval, and that through-coloured finishes remove the need for repainting.

Maintenance

Through-coloured renders carry their colour right through, so they do not need painting. Keep gutters, downpipes and window sealant in good order so water does not run down or behind the render. Silicone finishes are made to shed water, but shaded or north-facing walls can still pick up dirt or green algae over time. A suitable render cleaner applied gently is usually enough; avoid a pressure washer held close to the surface. For a specific product, follow the manufacturer's own care guidance; we can tell you which applies to your walls.

About the render systems we install

On site

Preparation, finishes and maintenance

Preparation

Monocouche renders go onto masonry such as blockwork and brick. We fit beads to corners and openings, add mesh where different materials meet, and treat the background first if its suction needs controlling. The render is then usually sprayed by machine in two passes.

Finishes

The most common finish is scraped: once the render has partly set, the surface is scraped back to an even, slightly textured face. Depending on the product, textured spray and smoother finishes are also available, in the manufacturer's colour range.

Maintenance

The colour runs right through, so it does not need painting. Keep gutters, downpipes and window sealant in good order so water does not run down or behind the render. If it needs cleaning, use a gentle method suited to render rather than a close-range pressure washer.

Questions

Common questions

Is through-coloured render the same as monocouche?

The terms are often used for the same type of product: a coloured, cement-based render. Exact specifications vary between manufacturers.

Does it need painting?

It is not painted after application, because the colour is mixed through the render. Over time it can weather or collect dirt depending on exposure. Maintenance depends on the manufacturer's system and the conditions, and we will explain what applies to your property.

Do you do commercial projects?

Yes. Our past projects include Bradford Forster Academy and Queens Lodge Nursing Home in Blackburn.

Brilliant! from initial contact to finished product

I cannot recommend these chaps enough! Brilliant from first contact. Offered advice on type of render, very flexible on availability, always easy to contact. The finished product was brilliant and has transformed our somewhat depressing house into a beautiful property! Highly recommended, thank you
