Silicone rendering in Leeds

A thin-coat render with a silicone-resin finish. It is coloured through rather than painted on site, and its surface is designed to repel water. Upkeep over the years depends on the system, the exposure of the wall and the manufacturer's guidance.

About this finish

How silicone render works

What it is

Silicone render is a thin-coat finish applied over a prepared, reinforced base coat. The silicone resin gives the surface its water-repellent character, which helps rain run off rather than soak in.

Where it suits

It is widely used on new builds, extensions and renovations, and over external wall insulation. Whether it suits your wall depends on the background, so we check that at the site visit.

Colour and texture

The colour is in the material itself. Available colours and grain sizes depend on the manufacturer's system, and we can talk you through the options for your property.

Approved contractor

Ecorend

Ecorend is a UK render manufacturer based in Dalton, North Yorkshire, and part of the Wetherby group. It makes through-coloured (monocouche) and thin-coat render systems in Yorkshire.

Ecorend systems we install

As approved contractors, we can install render systems from the Ecorend range, including:

  • MR1 One Coat Render: a through-coloured monocouche render that Ecorend describes as low-carbon
  • LMR1 Lime Monocouche: a one-coat lime render for traditional solid masonry and older buildings
  • SR15 Silicone, SF15 Sil-Flex and SR365 Ultimate Silicone: silicone thin-coat renders
  • DR1 Dash Receiver: a base for dry-dash finishes
  • EWI versions of its systems: for external wall insulation

We confirm the exact system for your walls at the site visit and in your quote.

Suitable for

New and existing masonry homes and commercial buildings. Ecorend positions the lime system for heritage and solid-wall properties that need to breathe, and its insulation systems for improving energy efficiency.

Finishes

Through-coloured renders give an even colour and texture with no painting. Thin-coat systems come in a range of colours and textures; Ecorend offers a colour selector.

Main benefits

Ecorend states its products carry British Board of Agrément (BBA) approval, and that through-coloured finishes remove the need for repainting.

Maintenance

Through-coloured renders carry their colour right through, so they do not need painting. Keep gutters, downpipes and window sealant in good order so water does not run down or behind the render. Silicone finishes are made to shed water, but shaded or north-facing walls can still pick up dirt or green algae over time. A suitable render cleaner applied gently is usually enough; avoid a pressure washer held close to the surface. For a specific product, follow the manufacturer's own care guidance; we can tell you which applies to your walls.

About the render systems we install

On site

Preparation, finishes and maintenance

Preparation

We check the wall is sound and clean, remove anything loose and fit beads to corners, edges and openings. Depending on the background, it may need a levelling coat first. A base coat with reinforcing mesh goes on next, then a primer where the system calls for one.

Finishes

The silicone finish coat is applied thin and floated to an even texture set by the grain size of the product. Colours come from the manufacturer's range, which varies between systems.

Maintenance

Silicone finishes are made to shed water, but shaded or north-facing walls can still pick up dirt or green algae. A suitable render cleaner applied gently is usually enough; avoid a pressure washer held close. Keep gutters, downpipes and window sealant in good order, and follow the manufacturer's care guidance for your system.

Questions

Common questions

Does silicone render need painting?

It is not painted when it is applied, because the colour is in the finish coat. Like any external finish it can collect dirt or algae over time, especially on shaded or exposed walls. How it should be cleaned or maintained depends on the manufacturer's system, and we will explain that for your job.

Can it go over my existing walls?

Often, but it depends on the background and its condition. We assess the wall at the site visit and explain what preparation it needs before quoting.

Is there a guarantee?

Guarantees on render systems usually come from the manufacturer and depend on the system used. Ask us about the guarantee for your specific job when you get your quote.

Brilliant! from initial contact to finished product

I cannot recommend these chaps enough! Brilliant from first contact. Offered advice on type of render, very flexible on availability, always easy to contact. The finished product was brilliant and has transformed our somewhat depressing house into a beautiful property! Highly recommended, thank you
