Pebble dashing in Leeds
Pebble dashing is the traditional finish where small stones are thrown onto a wet render coat, leaving a hard-wearing, textured surface.
How pebble dashing works
What it is
A base render is applied and, while the top coat is still wet, aggregate is cast onto it so the stones bed into the surface.
Where it suits
It suits properties where a traditional finish is wanted, or where new work needs to sit alongside existing dash on neighbouring houses or the rest of the building.
Repairs and matching
Matching existing dash depends on finding a similar aggregate. We look at the existing finish at the site visit and are honest about how close a match is likely to be.
Preparation, finishes and maintenance
Preparation
Loose or hollow render is removed and the background repaired. A base coat is applied and scratched to give a key, then a final coat goes on to receive the dash.
Finishes
Aggregate is cast onto the final coat while it is still wet, so the stones bed in. The look depends on the size and colour of the stone; dash can be left natural or painted later with a masonry paint.
Maintenance
Check now and then for hollow or cracked patches, especially around gutters and downpipes, and repair them early to stop water getting behind. Painted dash will need repainting over time.
